Fun Home
Spun from a graphic memoir of literary genius, "Fun Home" clears a path of originality for the American musical. This is the third time I've seen the show, and my admiration keeps growing.

Why see Fun Home?
Winner of five Tony Awards!
Hailed as Broadway's most original new musical in years, the multi Tony-winning Fun Home is hitting the road in 2016. An emotionally charged and poignant family drama, Fun Home is inspired by the graphic novel of the same name by Alison Bechdel, in which she explores her coming out and the suicide of her domineering father Bruce. An inventively staged patchwork of memories and conversations taking place over three different time periods, the show is written by Lisa Kron (Voyage to Lesbos) and is laced together with a remarkable, Seventies-inflected score from Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie).
Fun Home first played Off-Broadway at The Public Theatre in 2013, before transferring to Broadway's Circle in the Square Theatre. Utterly distinct from The Great White Way's usual assortment of revivals and movie adaptations, this production was adored by critics and audiences alike, and became the year's most atypical smash hit! It was nominated for an astounding twelve Tony Awards, and won five, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.
What is Fun Home About?
Alison Bechdel looks back through three separate periods of her life, a jumble of memories that always seem to center on her controlling father Bruce, who was prone to violent mood swings and bouts of depression. Her father killed himself soon after Alison came out during college, and it's later revealed that he himself was gay, but had never been able to come out of the closet. As she reconstructs their relationship in her mind, Alison wonders what part her revelation played in his death.
Did You Know?
Alison Bechdel is the originator of the Bechdel Test, the simple three point test of gender equality in film that so many Hollywood blockbusters fail to pass.
