Elvis Costello

Why see Elvis Costello?

back on the road

An icon of new wave, Brit Elvis Costello is out on the road again this year, bringing that distinctive voice, lyrical wit and catchy hooks to a venue near you. First coming to prominence in 1977 with debut album 'My Aim Is True', Costello (real name Declan McManus) has been steadily making music ever since, with classic hits including 'Alison', 'Oliver's Army', 'She', 'Pump it Up' and more.

In addition to his enviable career in music (Costello has worked with everyone from Burt Bacharach to the Foo Fighters,) he's also forged ahead creating movie soundtracks, nabbing acting roles and doing charity work. Don't miss this punk-hearted musical chameleon at one of his fantastically fun live dates.

With Stevie Nieve (19 Feb - 12 Mar)

Joining Elvis Costello on a series of 2025 dates is his long-term collaborator, Steve Nieve. Since the 1970s, Nieve has been Costello's right-hand man and the session musician behind many of Costello's most critically acclaimed works. Nieve now holds a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and boasts a Grammy Award nomination.

Glad I went!

Saw Elvis Costello yesterday (8/27/21) at the Uptown Theatre. I am not sure what I thought of it. It started at 7:15 and got over at 9:20. The normal lead guitar player was not able to be with them so Charlie Sexton. He is a great guitar player, but not sure how much of the songs were new to him. The timing seemed off - but I can understand that. He played a half dozen of his hits and they were well received. Elvis made a comment that he normally won't do Allison because he can't do the guitar work, "But Charlie can..." and then they launched into it. They changed the name of the band from the Imposters to the Layabouts because of Charlie. Elvis told a story about his dad, Ross McManus, used the name of the Layabouts because he couldn't recording obligations. I am glad I went. I do wish he would have played the Kansas City song he knows - Liberty Street from The New Basement Tapes. He probably doesn't have much opportunity to play a KC song in KC. I also would have liked to hear songs like Ship Building, Motel Matches, but he played others that were very good to hear. The big tour starts in over a month so this and Omaha were more warm up concerts (I am guessing). ... Read more

The Genius of Elvis

If you were looking to see and hear the Elvis Costello songbook in classic form, you might’ve been disappointed. If you were looking for more of the incredible talent and range that we have been accustomed to, you were blown away. The unique orchestrations weaving a newly featured 4 piece horn section into and throughout the entire show. The songbook was on full display from Posession from Get Happy to Mr and Mrs Hush on Look Now, Elvis’s voice was in fine form singing w/ Steve Nieve’s beautiful keyboard on Accidents will happen and Shipbuilding. At almost 70 years old, Elvis continues to rewrite the classics and in my opinion, we are fortunate to bear witness. ... Read more
